If you’ve ever wondered what tools I reach for every single day in my studio, this is it — my tried-and-true lineup that has stood the test of time, fabric, and a whole lot of creativity.
Between my 58 years of sewing experience and my mother’s 60 years, we’ve seen just about every gadget, machine, and thread brand come and go. Over the decades, we’ve learned — sometimes the hard way — which brands deliver true workmanship and which ones don’t stand up to daily use. The tools listed here are the ones that have earned our trust, stitch by stitch.

My Everyday Studio Favorites
✂️ Juki TL 2000 Industrial Sewing Machine
This is my workhorse! It only does a straight stitch, but that’s all I need for a lot of my sewing. It handles quilts, bags, and multiple layers of fabric and leather beautifully, and the stitches are nice and even. When I’m working on a project that needs a good, strong stitch, this is the machine I reach for.
✂️ SINGER 7285Q Patchwork Sewing Machine
This is the heart of my studio. I love this SINGER for its smooth stitching, automatic needle threader, and extra-wide table that’s perfect for quilts and bags. It’s powerful, dependable, and beginner-friendly — everything you want in a daily sewing machine.
Brother ST4031HD Serger
This serger is a spitfire literally!!! Nothing finishes an edge like a serger! I keep two Brother 1634D & ST4031Hd machines set up — one for lighter fabrics and one for heavier projects (and faster). They give every piece that clean, professional finish that sets handmade apart from homemade.
✂️ Gingher Fabric Scissors ✂️
These are sacred in my house — Ginghers are for fabric only! My mom used them, I use them, and they’ve been cutting clean edges for generations. They stay sharp, feel balanced, and glide through fabric like butter.
💕 Olfa 3′ x 6′ Cutting Mat 💕
A big, self-healing cutting mat is a game-changer. This Olfa mat gives me all the space I need to cut large pieces accurately without nicking my table. Durable and dependable — I’ve had mine for years!
✂️ Olfa Rotary Cutters ✂️
Once you use a rotary cutter, you’ll never go back to scissors for straight lines. I keep a few Olfa cutters in rotation — one for fabric, one for interfacing, and one backup just in case. The grip is comfortable and the blades stay razor sharp.
🪄 Clover Seam Rippers 🪄
Every sewist needs a good seam ripper — or two. Clover’s is the best I’ve found for removing stitches cleanly without tearing fabric. It’s a simple tool, but one that saves so many projects. I still use my mom’s Clover Seam Ripper and Awl, she gave them to me one time I was driving through Omaha, NE
🔥 Rowenta Iron 🔥
Pressing is the secret to professional results. My Rowenta heats evenly and delivers a perfect burst of steam, even for thick seams. It’s worth every penny for that crisp, finished look.
🧵 Gutermann Thread 🧵
Consistent, smooth, and strong — that’s Gutermann. I use their polyester thread for almost everything. My mom swore by it, and now I do too. It runs beautifully through both my SINGER and my sergers without tangling or breaking.
